John Meyer : A Legacy of Distinction in Advancing Audio

John Meyer : A Legacy of Distinction in Advancing Audio

John Meyer’s early career included creating the innovative Glyph loudspeaker system, designing loudspeakers for McCune Sound Service, and as a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Musical Studies in Switzerland. He and his wife, Helen, founded Meyer Sound in 1979 after their return to the San Francisco Bay Area at a time when most large-scale sound equipment was custom because there were no manufacturers providing high quality, concert-level systems. Meyer Sound changed that situation, and, in doing so, changed the industry.
The company’s breakthroughs started immediately. After creating subwoofers for the multichannel sound system touring with Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, Meyer Sound introduced the UPA-1, a processor-controlled loudspeaker with a patented trapezoidal enclosure shape. The UPA-1 was an inaugural inductee into the TECnology Hall of Fame, alongside Edison’s cylinder recorder and De Forest’s triode vacuum tube.

Glyph Loudspeaker
Glyph Loudspeaker
The company’s ongoing string of awards, patents, and products and technologies are acclaimed for their quality and usefulness: arrayable point-source loudspeakers, source independent measurement, cardioid subwoofers, self-powered loudspeakers for studio and stage, high-accuracy studio monitors, acoustical prediction software, atmospheric compensation equalization and more. Meyer Sound is renowned for products of unparalleled fidelity and road-worthiness, as well as for outstanding customer support. In recognition of his contributions, John Meyer was designated a Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society.
In the 1990s, Meyer Sound began a major expansion at its Berkeley headquarters, including building a large anechoic chamber for research and development, a driver fabrication facility, and a new assembly plant. These facilities bear “planetary” nicknames: Saturn, Mars, Earth, and Phoebe (a moon of Saturn and the newest facility). In 2004, the company erected a unique, 57-seat theatre on site for training, research, and demonstration. The theatre’s design and construction represent a new approach to multipurpose venues, and has attracted notice from top professionals in theatre, film, and other sectors of the arts world.

Audio Precision and LnK Partner for SoundWire™ Audio Test for Pairing of audio analyzer and protocol

Audio Precision and LnK Partner for SoundWire™ Audio Test for Pairing of audio analyzer and protocol.

The analyzer streamlines closed-loop audio measurement of SoundWire-enabled devices

Audio Precision, the recognized standard in audio test, today announced its collaboration with LnK to address the SoundWire audio test needs of MIPI Alliance member companies. Combining an APx Series audio analyzer with LnK’s protocol analyzer creates a closed-loop measurement system for the real-time evaluation of chipset and mobile product designs incorporating MIPI’s SoundWire interface.

MIPI SoundWire
Developed to address the limitations—such as power, pin count, ease-of-integration, scalability—of legacy interface designs, MIPI SoundWire reflects the efforts of more than 25 MIPI Alliance members and offers both complementary and unique features as an alternative to MIPI SLIMbus® for the integration of audio devices in mobile, or mobile-inspired, systems. SoundWire can be implemented in small, very cost-sensitive audio peripherals such as amplifiers and microphones and offers features that include double data rate; low complexity, power and latency; PCM and PDM formats; and multichannel data.

Closed-Loop SoundWire Audio Test
The pairing of an APx Series audio analyzer and LnK protocol analyzer eliminates the need for device designers to develop their own SoundWire Master IP in order to conduct audio testing. More importantly, it offers additional, real-time test capabilities, including the measurement of propagation delay, acoustic response and other transient behaviors. Audio Precision and LnK will demonstrate SoundWire audio testing at this week’s MIPI Development Conference (booth #8) in Mountain View, California, USA.

“We’re excited to collaborate with LnK and streamline the audio test of SoundWire devices” said Spyros Lazaris, Audio Precision Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “And helping engineers, in this case mobile chipset and product designers, as they endeavor to develop and verify the performance of their next-generation systems is at the core of what we do.”

About LnK
Founded in 2007, LnK provides protocol analyzers, as well as training and test consulting services, for SLIMbus and SoundWire interface technologies. LnK is an active member of the MIPI Alliance. For more information, visit http://www.lnk-tools.com/.

Dante – Audinate Creates a One Wire Revolution in Sound!

Audinate Creates a Revolution in Sound!

Why can’t high quality audio be transmitted over one wire?

Based on industry standards, Audinate created Dante, an uncompressed, multi-channel digital media networking technology, with near-zero latency and synchronization. Dante is the preferred audio networking solution that has been adopted by more pro-audio AV manufacturers than any other networking technology. Interoperability is not a dream of the future, but a reality today. Hundreds of Dante-enabled products are available from the world’s leading manufacturers, enabling you to mix devices from multiple manufacturers.

Economical and Versatile
One cable does it all. Dante does away with heavy, expensive analog or multicore cabling, replacing it with low-cost, easily-available CAT5e, CAT6, or fiber optic cable for a simple, lightweight, and economical solution. Dante integrates media and control for your entire system over a single, standard IP network.

Dante systems can easily scale from a simple pairing of a console to a computer, to large capacity networks running thousands of audio channels. Because Dante uses logical routes instead of physical point-to-point connections, the network can be expanded and reconfigured at any time with just a few mouse clicks.

Outstanding Quality
Since audio is transmitted digitally, you don’t have to worry about the common analogue challenges of interference from other electrical equipment, crosstalk between cables, or signal degradation over long cable runs.

Easy To Install
Setting up Dante networks couldn’t be easier. You no longer have to shudder when considering the deployment of an audio network. Even the most complex networks can be set up and configured quickly and easily with Dante, making system integration simple. Dante automatically handles the technical complexities for you.

Signal routing and system configuration with Dante is fast, simple, and incredibly flexible. Dante Controller is a powerful software application that manages devices on the network. Setting up a Dante network is typically just a matter of plugging devices into an Ethernet switch and connecting a computer to the network. All Dante devices are automatically discovered and displayed in Dante Controller, so you can be up and running in seconds.

Easy to Use
With Dante Controller you can easily edit device names and channel labels, control sample rates, and set device latencies. There is no longer any need to remember device IDs or channel numbers. Instead, a single audio channel is referred to just like an email address: “leadVocal @ StageBoxSL or ”chairmans_mic @ conferenceroomA”. Set it and forget it. Once the network is configured, the computer running Dante Controller can be removed from the network, and reconnected only if changes are required or system monitoring is desired. Signal routing and other system settings are stored safely in the Dante devices themselves, so they are automatically restored if a device is power-cycled.

Network Health and Management
Real-time information about the health of your network is essential for a proper understanding of its performance. Audinate has developed a rich suite of diagnostic tools within Dante Controller, providing visibility into the network health status through features such as device latency monitoring, active clock health monitoring, packet error reporting, and bandwidth usage statistics.

Glitch-Free Redundancy
Many Dante-enabled devices support ‘glitch–free’ redundancy, enabling a secondary physical network to be provided, duplicating the audio traffic on the primary network. This automatically prevents any audio loss or interruption in the event of a connectivity problem on the primary network.

Unicast or Multicast
Dante audio channels can be configured as unicast or multicast as appropriate, to make best use of available bandwidth. Unicast provides a direct point-to-point stream for unique channels; multicast sends an audio stream to multiple devices simultaneously.

Fully Integrated with Windows and Mac OS X
With Dante Virtual Soundcard, your computer becomes a Dante audio interface for multitrack recording and media playback, using the computer’s existing Ethernet port — no additional hardware is required. Digital Audio Workstations, software-based media players, Skype, iTunes, Pandora, Spotify and other applications are easily integrated into your network via Dante Virtual Soundcard.

Ask for the Dante. Dante is easy to integrate, easy to install, and easy to use.
